Life in Sydenham, 2044.
Sydenham is one of the Inner West's hidden treasures. Tucked between Marrickville, Tempe, and the bustling Newtown, this suburb offers a quieter, more laid-back lifestyle while still being close to all the action. Here are a few of my favourite things about Sydenham:
Sydney Park
A stone's throw from Sydenham, Sydney Park is the perfect retreat for locals. With the largest off-lead dog park in Sydney, it’s a go-to spot for dog owners. Your pup can roam freely, take a dip in the pond, and enjoy the lush green space. Beyond the dog park, the park offers cycle paths, playgrounds, and even a skate park. The hills are perfect for a picnic, and there's always something happening, whether it’s a community event or just a weekend stroll.
Precinct 75
Just a short walk from Sydenham, Precinct 75 was a hub for small businesses, creatives, and entrepreneurs. Hopefully it will be again one day, although it is currently undergoing a huge private transformation project.
It’s also home to Willie the Boatman Brewery (this remains open during the transformation), which locals have known and loved for years (even before the fame of their Albo Pale Ale!). It's a great spot to grab a cold one with friends or check out the latest pop-up events. You may even see Albo in there having a beer.
Sydenham's Café Culture
There’s a growing café culture in Sydenham, and Tommy Black is one of the standout spots. Known for their expertly brewed coffee, this local favourite is where you'll find the morning crowd sipping on their lattes and chatting with neighbours.
The General Gordon Hotel
Join the locals at the General Gordon - a pub with a great outdoor terrace (covered and uncovered), dog friendly, great food and drag trivia on Tuesday’s. The pub re-opened during covid after catching fire in 2018.
Sydenham Station
Getting around Sydenham is a breeze, thanks to Sydenham Station becoming part of the newly opened Sydney Metro. Recently undergoing upgrades to improve accessibility, including the addition of lifts, it’s set to become even more commuter-friendly. Travel time to Martin Place is 11 mins, and Macquarie Park in 31mins, Total game changer!
